Pen-Kalamkari or Hand-painted kalamkari is an-ancient heritage craft of India, mainly performed in Sri-kalahasti located in Andhra Pradesh. Its a GI tag craft from Andhra.
Kalamkari is derived as 'Kalam' which means 'Pen' and 'Kari' which refers to craftsmanship. The Kalamkari art depicts epics tales from "Hindu mythology" like Mahabharata or Ramayana and "Hindu God and Goddesses. It also includes floral motifs, animal forms, and villages background.
Pen-Kalamkari is totally freehand drawing and natural colors are most authentically used to fill up the backgrounds.
The process of Kalamkari is very slow and lengthy. It involves more than twenty steps from dipping in buffalo milk to mordanting and making of natural colors etc...
The place of Pen-Kalamkari in the market is very high in demand. It nurtures many artisan families. We should try to preserve or save the authenticity of this heritage craft of our country.
